Many Adopt-a-Class TN members are classroom volunteers who work directly with children, at all of our adopted schools, as tutors, either individually or in small groups. Each volunteer is matched with a teacher and a classroom. This allows the volunteers to get to know the children and feel pride in their progress.
Schedules are flexible and organized directly with the teacher. Most volunteers work 3 to 5 hours per week, either on one day or split into multiple days. Some volunteers choose to spend more hours at school. Volunteers may assist in any grade or class. Volunteers also assist in "Specials", such as Art, Special Ed, and PE. Teaching experience is not required.
Classroom volunteers served for over 3500 hours in the 2022-2023 School year.
Our adopted schools are secure. Each school has a permanently scheduled police resource officer on the premises. The schools are locked to the public so only authorized visitors can enter. Camera monitoring is also employed.
Classroom Volunteers at Loudon and Steekee Elementary Schools are required to present their driver's license upon entry to the school for security clearance. A valid name tag is then printed for their daily use.
Classroom Volunteers at Vonore Elementary School are now REQUIRED to have a background check which includes fingerprinting at an identogo authorized facility. The $35 cost is the responsibility of the volunteer.
Detailed instructions for Monroe County Background Checks are included on the “Form” page of this website. These
instructions may be downloaded and printed.
